We do not write in order to be understood; we write in order to understand. -C. Day Lewis

I'm an educator, writer, and wildlife rehabilitator with a passion for curiosity, education, literature, human interaction, and nature. My goal is to empower students through engagement, collaboration, critical thinking, and literacy; I want to establish empathy and communication in their lives through reading and art, and to explore humanity and learning through the process of writing. I completed my Masters in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Writing from Auburn University, and currently teach high school English. Previously, I taught as a professor at the College of Charleston, and worked as a writing and training specialist in the Department of Homeland Security. On the side, I work as a freelance journalist for various publications. Peruse this site as you will; here you can find everything from samples of my writing and research, to my teaching portfolio.
